in which we plant stuff in the actual ground

The day before yesterday, Kevin prepped a 4’ x 8’ spot in the yard by dumping a wheelbarrow of our Very Own Compost onto the lawn and shoveling it all around methodically. This evening, he decided to finish up and get the watermelon and cantaloupe babies in the ground.

Here he is contemplating the 50 pound bag of Moo Doo – that’s composted cow poop.

He went off in search of a shovel while I helped by staying up on the deck.

I continued to help.

Yep, still helping.

OK, then I actually did start helping, by getting the hose – from the other side of the deck – strung out across the deck.

As soon as Kevin started removing the babies from their six-packs I was like “oooh oooh oooh!” and basically muscled my way into the game. Here I am, sporting my Emmylou Harris look.

We crammed a whole bunch of these guys into the space. Maybe they’ll need more room – who knows. They’re welcome to send runners all over the lawn, as far as we’re concerned.

Kevin gave them another drink from the hose and then removed all the pieces of board (because they’re pressure-treated lumber and hence have no business being anywhere near these plants.)

Remember the rhododendron over by the little garden shed? Here’s a close-up.

Right next to it – sorry for the poor quality – is a mystery flower. Looks like a lily, but it is on a shrub. Maybe it’s another kind of azalea? You’d think I’d know this – this is only my FIFTH summer living in this house (WTF?! how’d that happen?). Can that be right? Yeah…2006, we got married here in the yard…2007, I moved here full time…2008, that was a blur, let’s just forget that year, shall we?…2009, that was last year…OK, yeah, year five. Wow.

trillium, and wild ginger.
